Subject:LJ Outrage {biased post, just to warn}
Posted by:olpluvr.
Time:11:21 pm.
Mood: infuriated.
I received an e-mail from LJ saying that they banned this community, debatification. After looking into it, I realized that many communities were suspended just because of controversial content- specifically pedophilia. Perverted Justice is quoted in stating that LJ is "an aggressive Corporate Sex Offender". Reading this post gave me more insight to what's going on in the LJ community.

Original E-MailCollapse )

Below is another complaint that was launched a while back. My community would fit in this category as we never encouraged illegal activity, or giving instructions/ hints how to engage in illegal activity. It was a community for debating life issues but somehow LJ went on a striking frenzy and deleted all communities remotely mentioning interests in something. Debatification was inactive for over a year as well but it doesn't change the fact that this was a mature debating community discussing issues in life that are controversial. As a mod I never came across comments endorsing illegal activities in any country or state, though of course it was discussed as an issue instead of any detailed "plots" or anything.

Response from Abuse Team regarding a past issueCollapse )

On another account of mine a user was harassing every member and adding them to their f-list completely degrading everyone and kept making alias accounts to be accepted. I wrote LJ and alas, got the same kind of response as the above mentioned response one.

It disappoints me that the US has laws that forbid freedom of speech apparantly *obvious sarcasm*, while LJ is hypocritical (see above statement) by banning communities that are harmless and that also don't encourage any illegal activity... such as mine. I am enraged that LJ didn't take the time to actually read through these communities, but rather suspended accounts based on controversial terms. Because there are always 2 sides to each story, please read LJ's apology so that you can come to a better understanding of the situation: http://news.livejournal.com/99159.html?thread=47729495 .

Not only was this done to communities, but to personal journals as well. This happened to mine 2 days ago and I responded immediately for LJ to show proof of the allegations toward my site but alas, no response. Some of you think I may be taking this way out of context but I think it's a serious matter when basic human rights are being taken away. Today LJ reinstated this account, but I have some questions to ask members of this community:

1. Does Livejournal or any other website have the right to suspend accounts under false pretenses? While this account has been reinstated, would it have been legit for them to (not legally) keep it suspended?

2. Do you believe that Livejournal's actions were a form of censorship, invading basic human rights, justified because of triggering key words on userinfo pages, any sort of statement to Perverted Justice (explain), and/ or merely actions of puppets of Warriors of Innocence who threatened to remove funding if this didn't take place.

3. What are your thoughts on how a company can take drastic and undeniably unfair measures with concerns to how the company can be "trusted" in the future?

4. On a somewhat related note, what are your views on Perverted Justice's claims that Livejournal is "an aggressive Corporate Sex Offender"? It is a harsh accusation, so did P.J. take it too far with this accusation or should it be exposed more than it really has been in the past?

5. Your views on anything other aspect to this issue.

Subject:"Survivor Segregation"
Posted by:olpluvr.
Time:2:33 am.
Mood: awake.
For those of you who are not familiar with the reality television series Survivor, click here to see how the game works.

I have not watched season 13, but became intrigued when I found out what it is about. The "twist" to this season is that the participants were divided into groups based on race at the beginning of the series. All are American, but the four groups consist of African, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Asian tribe members.

Do you believe that it is about time that television finally addressed unspoken racial issues of today, or has it gone too far by feeding into racial stereotypes? If you have watched this season, have you found that the members have fed into cliche views of their races or overcome them with unique personalities?

Does the winner of the show, and/or the runner ups, represent their race subconsciously? Possibly prove who is "better"? Or is it random, based on personalities, not based on their races/ how they interact with other tribe members?

Or is this just purely entertainment without any real value in the content- merely made to draw in a larger realm of audiences? Overall, do you think that the concept for this season's Survivor will have any impact on viewers (good or bad)? Should this idea have been broadcasted to millions of viewers?

Another "touche" subject.

Can suicide ever be deemed as acceptable in any case? For example, a suicide bomber who is fighting for his (generally male) country in a lethal manner, or a person without friends/ family/ job/ no one even knows of his/her existence except for the government as they collect taxes?

Sounds like extreme situations, but is it ever right to off yourself? Even if "right' means that it is acceptable that someone is being a self-proclaimed martyr by fighting for his/her rights or using "life" as a powerful movement of sorts? Who is it seen "right" by, if it's seen as being "right", and whose opinions are more important- loved ones of the person or the person by trying to fulfill something?

Generally, suicide experienced by individuals who feel hopeless about their current situations, the lives they have created/ been born into, etc. So when they take their own lives, is it selfish because of the pain that loved ones will endure? Or can it be considered selfish of the loved ones when all a person wants to do is die because he/ she cannot bear to continue living a life that has been nothing but hell and it can never change? And to conclude this debate like the last paragraph, whose feelings are more relevant and who should be made happy- the suicide attempter or the loved ones? Another thought to think of is the abortion issue: "pro-choice"- taking a life or also how much of a choice someone has over his/ her own body... how much of a say should we really have? Not a direct link, but a suggestion.
Is someone who tries to take his/her life a coward for getting rid of his/ her problems the *easy* way, or has mental illness taken over so extremely that the person cannot think clearly and so it is seen more as the mental illness taking over... not the person? (Consider the mental illnesses, if you believe they exist, that would drive someone to attempt/ commit suicide)

This brings in another thought about euthanasia and how a pet (viewpoint of this social definition of "family" or "property") can be put down for suffering, yet a human can't. Mental or physical- but this post doesn't concern this subject. It's a thought that can arise with pondering opposing views.

PS- I know it's been awhile since there's been an update, but I hope someone responds. Now I have more time to put into this community and possibly recruit more people.

Subject:Gas Prices
Posted by:olpluvr.
Time:8:54 pm.
Mood: productive.

****Before I start, please note I will not use actual figures since the American and Canadian use different metric systems.

What should be done about gas prices? What method of human action do you think would help lower the astronomical prices of gas, if any?

On example is in New Brunswick, Canada, truckers blockaded the Trans Canada Highway but were eventually persuaded by the authorities to take the trucks off the road. Could this have been an effective form of rebellion or should the truckers have stuck to their guns and stayed on the road? Read this for the more in-depth story: http://www.recorder.ca/cp/National/050908/n0908139A.html

Other people have mentioned that going on strike for not buying gas would be effective in sending a message to the government, but what do you think? Would this method fail because people will eventually buy the gas just to get to their own destinations or do you think more people will start using public transportation to travel (ie.- cabs/ taxis, buses, subway...)

First the excuse of the raising prices was because of the War in Iraq, but now it is said that it is because of Hurricane Katrina and lack of resources. What do you think is the reason behind the hike in pricing? Do you think this is a tactic for the government to get more money so that when (if) they lower gas prices, there will be a boom of profit for frantic customers to fill up their vehicles and a load of money will be made or do you think the prices will ever go back down.

Note- On the news in Nova Scotia, it was mentioned that prices for groceries may increase due to the gas prices of the stock being transported to grocery stoers. Do you believe this is the reason, partly the reason, or is it that this industry is looking for an excuse to raise their own prices?

Subject:Armed and Ready
Posted by:olpluvr.
Time:12:51 pm.
Mood: excited.

What are your views on safety- from the public... aka "self-defense/ protection"?

Many people (moreso in the USA- or it might be a myth) protect their families by owning guns. When an intruder enters the house, they have the option to use and ensure that their family is unharmed. But is this a good idea, especially with children in the house? With freak accidents and children getting a hold of the weapons in the house, they can play a games and make-believe, but accidentally fire the weapon. They could also play games with regular household items, such as kitchen cutlery so should parents have all possible items hidden. Do you believe the average person would be able to fire a weapon without a second-guessing his/herself and end up making a fatal flaw anyway? Do the pros outweigh the cons?

Also, what about if you have to walk in a dangerous neighborhood at night? Is it better to be equipped in case of an attack- with a knife or gun- or are the chances of the weapon being turned on you too great to chance it? If you are being mugged, would you defend yourself by bringing in a weapon though you know that the culprit(s) might have one too or is it better to get one blow in and chance escaping?

Should people be equipped? If you think so, please explain why and weapons are ideal for your safety- or your family's safety. If not, what would you do in the case of having your house broken into (self-defense wise) or if you were mugged in the middle of the street?

This post will be unlike the other debatification post. I wrote this in my personal journal without even thinking that it would be a great debating topic. The result of me posting this was a full- fledged debate in my journal and I am hoping for the same type of feedback. People were questioning each other actively (which is my goal for this community), but the main debate here is Should people shave their pubic hair? Sorry for it being biased, but I just cut and pasted what was in my journal to this post.

Subject:Stereotypical Joking
Posted by:olpluvr.
Time:6:06 pm.
Mood: accomplished.

What do you think of homophobic/ racist/ sexist jokes (incl. other stereotypical terms)? The three views are:

1. It helps spread discrimination

2. They shouldn't be taken seriously because it really jokes about how ignorant people are to take them seriously.

3. The person guilty of making the joke doesn't know how much hurt it can cause to another.

Is the statement, "What a Jew?!" funny because it's just another term, with the word "Jew" meaning something inferior since it's supposed to be a subject-- subconsciously or bluntly? Does it offend anyone because of the persecution and mass genocide of millions of people of Jewish decent? Or when people view it as offensive, does it mean that they look too hard into statements when it's meant a harmless joke, clearly stated by the individual making it?

Just like the statement, "What's up, Nigger?!" when two friends (doesn't matter what their ethnicity is) see each other and say this as a greeting. Though the original term "Nigger" was meant to describe someone who was a thief, it was morphed into a slang for people of African decent. Again, should this be insulting because of the many years of slave-laboring or do people look too hard into innocent statements? Even within this definition, it only addresses this term as a racial slang because it was derived from the word "Niger", which means "dark- skinned". Also, is it alright for two people of African decent to say this to each other or is it acceptable because they know it isn't making fun of each other?

The most common statement we hear on the streets is, "That is SO gay!". It is obvious that we think of homosexuality instead of the primary meaning of "happy". When someone makes a statement such as this, are they really using the term "Gay" as an equivalent to "stupid" or referring to that term as somehow being inferior? Should people feel upset when they hear this statement, especially if the person is homosexual/ bisexual (in or out of "the closet" not an issue)or is it only a joke? What if people don't know that they are making others uncomfortable- does it make joking to this degree okay as long as nothing harmful is meant by the person saying it?

Do all of these jokes send harsh messages to the youth of today and give them negative images of the groups being degraded or is it an issue that really shouldn't even offend people? Does it affect the youth and help solidify discriminatory views or is it not taken seriously at all? (Should it be?) Do you think today's views have been changed about these stereotypes through society being exposed to diversity and only today's definitions of these words should be what they mean, or do the subliminal discriminatory meanings still actively linger?

What about Blonde jokes? Do you think they are funny or offensive, or both? If you are offended by the above terms but not blonde jokes, why are you only offended by certain stereotypes?

Do all these jokes isolate categories of people to make fun of them or are these jokes light- hearted with the satirical intent to make fun of those who are ignorant of diversity? Or can these people making the jokes be considered ignorant for not knowing that others are offended? The issue is whether of not someone should feel offended by this way of joking.

Subject:The Abortion Issue
Posted by:olpluvr.
Time:10:18 pm.
Mood: accomplished.

Abortion Issue:

  1. No one should tell a woman that she has to/ should/ can’t have an abortion.
  2. A fetus is a living being- to take a life is immoral and should be illegal.

What is the right to life? Can we kill someone in self- defense? Does a fetus have rights?

  1. What is a person?

A thing is a person to the degree that it:

  1. Can feel pleasure and pain (rocks can’t feel pleasure or pain)
  2. Is aware of its internal and external environment (Can’t be harmed if it doesn’t feel pain)
  3. Is intelligent
  4. Have goals and projects.
  5. Is self-aware (of you and world around you. No concept of life, not a harm to kill it?)
  6. Can communicate (pleasant/ non-pleasant)
  7. Can respect other people’s rights

Do you think someone has the right to tell a woman whether or not she should have an abortion?

Should abortions be legal?

How much of a say should the father of the unborn baby have?

What rights do a fetus have, when does a fetus "develop" rights to his/her own body?

At what stage of a fetus' development makes it become a baby?

What are your views overall about this issue?

Subject:Michael Jackson
Posted by:olpluvr.
Time:12:16 am.
Mood: unsatisfied.

I've tried these past few days to compile a debate with facts backed up for this topic, but everytime I write a paragraph it becomes very biased. Since it is also known throughout North America about the accusations made against the King of Pop, it's your turn to have your say.

Michael Jackson was aquitted on all 10 charges, with 4 being charges of child molestation. Is he a victim of society branding him as a pedophile because he's a successful artist, or is he really guilty and was aquitted because he can afford powerful lawyers?

One of the jurors (Raymond Hultman) who acquitted Michael Jackson on all counts said he believes the pop star is "probably" a molester, but the prosecution didn't prove it. Hultman said "that doesn't make sense" to him, when he spoke to a WNBC reporter about how Jackson allowed children to sleep in the same bed as himself. He also stated that didn't make Jackson guilty of the charges presented in this case.

Another note to be considered is whether or not his ex- wife Debbie Rowe told the truth. She admitted to selling her children fathered by Jackson to him, but now recants that statement made by British reporter Martin Bashir in the infamous documentary by saying that Michael threatened her by not ever letting her see the children again. Who is right in this situation, if anyone? What are your thoughts of the evidence against him shown by the prosecution (ie- the book found in his possession of naked boys- art or porn?).

There are many factors that can back up your opinion, so please voice what you think-- both in terms of if you think he's guilty, if you think he is what his punishment should be, who should maintain custody of the children he has with Ms. Rowe, and how fair the Martin Bashir documentary on Jackson was. If you believe Jackson is guilty, then it could be useful to return to this post and elaborate.

Subject:The afterlife, does it exist?!
Posted by:ferret_angels.
Time:10:51 pm.
Mood: accomplished.

Hello community!! This is my first debate post, it's going to be on the topic of "the afterlife". This post is going to be in a bit of a different format than olpluvr would use, I cannot provide links that give proof to if the afterlife actually exists, nobody can proof that. What I am going to provide are aspects of this topic to discuss, and you as the posters can elaborate on them, and enlighten us all with your personal beliefs. It's going to be up to you to back up your theories with the sources you used to form them, whether it be from a religious standpoint, proof gathered from the media, personal experiences, etc. Again, I stress that I'm merely providing guidelines to this discussion, if I fail to mention a subtopic that you would like to mention on this "outside of the box" topic, feel free to add it to your post.

So, as promised, here are some points to ponder as you post your thoughts:

1. Is there life after death?!

2. What do you think about the concept of "heaven" and "hell"?!

3. What happens to the soul when the physical body fails?!

4. Do "spirits" walk amongst us?!

5. Are ghosts real?!

6. Do you believe that people can actually communicate with the dead, whether it be through psychics, tarot card readings, EVP(electronic voice phenomenon), "picture evidence", etc?!

7. When you die, is that "it"?!

8. Should people be trying to communicate with the dead, or should they accept the fact that their loved ones are gone?!

Remember, feel free to add ANYTHING I neglected to mention that you feel should be discussed. Please share your ideas, and provide how you came to your conclusions by adding your personal sources.

Happy posting!!

4. Are there any jobs where you feel that these modifications are unacceptable?

5. Which piercings would you consider "acceptable", along with placement of tattoos, if you were an employer?

6. If you were an employer hiring a person, what would your first impression be of someone who walked into the interview with these body mods? Explain how you would judge this person (a slacker, an artistic person, etc.)

7. If someone walked into your place of work (hypothetically) with a visible scar/ tattoo/ piercing, would you find it disrespectful in any sense or a form of expression with preferences?

Mood: disappointed.

This is a taboo topic in many societies and the opinions vary on the spectrum of acceptance or banishment. The issue that will be presented today asks a few questions and will give you a few thoughts to ponder about, but the main debate is whether or not prostitution should be legalized. Many European countries have adapted this trend of legalization, but you decide if it was for the better. Whether or not you are for or against prostitution, there are many factors contributing to your overall view on this:

  • Your view on "John’s" (the males who hire them)
  • How (un)successful other areas of the world have been in making it legal
  • The violence in prostitution
  • Other choices women have: If they choose this profession or have no other money-making methods
  • The spread of STD’s and infections
  • Whether it controls or expands the sex industry (legalization)
  • The protection women have (or lack thereof?)
  • Would it increase child prostitution?

Mutilation, self-inflicted wounds, cutting, parasuicide. We hear about teenagers who cut parts of their body due to emotional distress, but there remains the true question: are these teenagers cutting to gain attention from family others, to fit in with other teenagers who are also doing it, or is it being done in secret to rid of emotional pain? Another point that should be considered is whether or not self- mutilation is an addictive behavior, an impulse that cannot be controlled, or another way to try and grasp life issues that it is felt by these teens, cannot be helped otherwise. If this behavior is for attention, under what conditions should a person cut for the right purposes (if you believe there are right reasons)?

The issue here is Homophobia. Many people would say that homosexuals have the same rights as heterosexual people. Many other people would disagree and say that it is disgusting to love someone of the same gender. Then there is the argument that it is a chemical imbalance in the brain and that it is a figment of the imagination that two people of the same gender could love each other in a sexual/ romantic relationship: that they could be rehabilitated to become straight. To make this topic about homophobia instead of "gay rights", we should take certain points into consideration before siding with one. The two points of view to side with are:

Hello Fellow Debaters,

I would like to update this site with another topic, but first I think it would be fair to ask a few questions to the people who have helped make this site alive: you all. It is currently 1:52am on April 18th and I will post something later on tonight, but I would like ideas to suit your interests more. After all, this site cannot be successful without your thoughts and views, which I must say here that ALL views presented are greatly appreciated

Originally, I had it that a topic would be posted every 3 days, in fear that the most current issue would become boring. As I noticed with the last 2 debates, this was not the case and I extended it to an total of every 5 days to update. Still, I am recieving comments from some of you and I'm wondering if it would be too long to update every week, or are people still commenting out of a bit of boredom? Or should I post when the debate seems to be dying down?

And generally, I would like to know what the top five issues are you would like to debate and I will make a post every "x" number of days to reflect what you would like to see. You choose the topics, you choose the number of days.

If there is anything else I have forgotten to mention, please voice your concerns/thoughts in the comment to this post. Any suggestions to better this site? Thanks!
